The quickest route from either destination is not the most scenic, though this trip we were lucky to be borrowing a Mercedes AMG GLC43 which practically drove itself as we navigated through the more drab parts of New Jersey and Delaware. When we finally crossed the bridge onto the island, the views proved well worth the trip: The protected stretch of Maryland’s Eastern Shore is home to a herd of wild ponies, made famous in Marguerite Henry’s 1947 book Misty of Chincoteague. They spend the day grazing in the marshes, resting in the dunes, and, much to the delight of day trippers, strolling nonchalantly on the road. Campsites are available both in the State Park portion of the island, and the National Seashore part, but if you book in the State Park then you can rent an Assateague Cottage. The bright tiny homes on wheels, each outfitted with a queen-sized bed, are the brainchild of Ron Harrigan, who initially started a pop-up camper business but found that they were susceptible to storm damage. His cottages are hardier, and better at keeping campers cool in the summer, warm in the winter. All you have to do is show up: Harrigan offers campsite delivery and pickup of each cottage.
